Weddings - The Best Gigs?

This weekend, one of my gigs was a wedding which went really well, and in general, weddings tend to be one of the more enjoyable gigs.

Weddings are very happy occasions, everyone is there to celebrate and keen to be entertained - which is perfect for me. But the main reason why weddings tend to be good gigs is because of the wide range of ages in the audience.

Different age groups react in different ways when you approach them and say ‘I’m the magician’:

  • Older people (60 ish plus) tend to think it’s quite a novelty and are really interested.
  • Kids love magic and often won’t leave you alone once they know you are a magician (provided you are any good of course!)
  • Teenagers and students also love magic, but tend to be a little more reserved about it.
  • Middle aged people (32 to 60 - I’m 31!) can sometimes be a little negative and cautious when you introduce yourself.

What’s great about weddings is that every group or table usually includes some kids, teenagers or older people so you generally get a positive response straight away. If you don’t get a positive response, you have to work a little harder to get people on your side.

Why do some people have a negative image of magicians? Well, that’s a topic for another post…

Ahem, I’m 32 and not sure that makes me middle aged!

But I think a magician at a wedding is a fantastic idea - I imagine it would be a great way of breaking the ice because there are often lots of people who haven’t met each other before.
