Web Promotion Lecture
On Monday night I presented a lecture at the Leicester Magic Circle about promoting yourself on the internet. I talked mainly about having your own website and how to get people to visit it.
It was difficult to know what level to pitch it, because the members have a wide range of internet and technical knowledge, but it seemed to go down pretty well - even with those who had no idea what I was talking about! Magicians have inquisitive minds.
The main way people find websites is through search engines, so I spent most time talking about getting to the top of the search engine results (Search Engine Optimisation or SEO).
Broken right down, this involves:
- Decide on the key words and phrases people are going to type in to find your site.
- Incorporate them into your web pages, especially important elements like the title, description and headings
- Create useful content, using lots of text
- Design using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
- Build links to your site with keywords and phrases in the link text
Seems straightforward, but there is a lot of work involved in optimising your site.
I’m going to create a Web Promo page for this site where I’ll go into a little more detail, especially from the point of view of optimising magic websites.

If only - but where would the fun be in that?!
