Web Promotion Lecture

On Monday night I presented a lecture at the Leicester Magic Circle about promoting yourself on the internet. I talked mainly about having your own website and how to get people to visit it.

It was difficult to know what level to pitch it, because the members have a wide range of internet and technical knowledge, but it seemed to go down pretty well - even with those who had no idea what I was talking about! Magicians have inquisitive minds.

The main way people find websites is through search engines, so I spent most time talking about getting to the top of the search engine results (Search Engine Optimisation or SEO).

Broken right down, this involves:

  1. Decide on the key words and phrases people are going to type in to find your site.
  2. Incorporate them into your web pages, especially important elements like the title, description and headings
  3. Create useful content, using lots of text
  4. Design using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
  5. Build links to your site with keywords and phrases in the link text

Seems straightforward, but there is a lot of work involved in optimising your site.

I’m going to create a Web Promo page for this site where I’ll go into a little more detail, especially from the point of view of optimising magic websites.
