Hot Magic

I was performing close-up magic at a wedding over the weekend and phew, was it hot. Too hot to be trussed up in a suit and tie.

The wedding was quite a formal one, so I had to fit in and be dressed smartly but it really was too hot for wearing a suit with pockets full of props. We have a heat wave in the Midlands at the moment so it’s going to be a problem for the next week or two (they may be famous last words - it will probably tip it down now!).

I’m working tonight in Sheffield, so hopefully it will be a bit cooler up there at that time of the day. I’m going to work light as well, no suit and just a pack of cards, a few coins and some elastic bands. I’ll still have my case with me though, so I can dip into it if need be.

I think I carry too many props a lot of the time, but it’s just to make sure I’m prepared for any situation and any audience (I tend to change what I’m performing depending on the audience). Tonight will be good practice for me.

    Hi Dan,

Glad to know I’m not the only close-upper trying to keep cool. When it’s too hot for a suit I work in dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, black trousers and waistcoat (unbuttoned). If you haven’t already seen it the new Jerry O’Connell billfold wallet is perfect for this situation - card to wallet from a trouser pocket. The new version of the wallet works like a dream and is very high quality - highly recommended. Anyway best of luck - and thank goodness for air-conditioned venues !!

A waistcoat is a good idea, as is a good wallet. I use Scott Creasey’s Swiss Army wallet, which works from any pocket and you can use for peeks and coin effects.

Luckily the venue in Sheffield was air-conditioned!
