Magical Memories

It’s interesting how people remember magic.

At a gig I performed at tonight an elderly gent was telling me about a bar bet/magic trick that a friend of his (not a magician) showed him years ago. It involved tying a loop of string around the handle of a beer mug and betting that no one could remove it without untying the knot in the string or breaking or damaging either the string or the mug.

Of course, this mysterious friend could do it ‘just by looping it around his finger and pulling’ leaving the string loop tied but suddenly free of the handle of the beer mug. Needless to say, he won plenty of free pints.

The way he told it it sounded like a miracle.

Now, if it really happened like that, I know there is more to it. He must of missed some salient piece of information out about what happened. Perhaps it the string was tied with a special knot, or it wasn’t merely ‘looped’ through the handle.

But our memories are extremely fallible and I’m sure this gentleman has just remembered what he was supposed to remember about a clever magic trick.

Who knows what people will remember about what I performed tonight?!

PS No rude comments about that last line please.

PPS If any one knows how to perform this bar bet, feel free to comment. I could do with a few free pints!
