Web promotion and Search Engine Optimisation page

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

I’ve finally finished writing up more detail on the [web promotion lecture->] I presented for my local magic club several weeks ago. It is on a new page, [web promotion and SEO->web-promo-seo] (Search Engine Optimisation).

I have more to add to these pages, such as a list of sites to get magic related links from and a list of general directories, but they’re not finished yet!

Web Promotion Lecture

Friday, May 19th, 2006

On Monday night I presented a lecture at the Leicester Magic Circle about promoting yourself on the internet. I talked mainly about having your own website and how to get people to visit it.

It was difficult to know what level to pitch it, (more…)

Update to wedding page on DG.com

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

I’ve updated my [main site->http://www.dangifford.com/wedding-websites.htm] this week, but it’s been a while and I couldn’t remember exactly how I made it work!

I had to go back to [www.yourhtmlsource.com->http://www.yourhtmlsource.com/] which I originally used to get my head around CSS. It’s a great site and I highly recommend it if you want to learn HTML and CSS. It is very clearly laid out, making it easy to find specific information and has very clear descriptions of CSS techniques.

I might do a more thorough review of this site when I have more time…

Google Page Creator

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

Google have introduced another free service, Google Page Creator (is there bit of the web Google have not got a finger in?) which allows you to, well, create webpages. It’s very easy to use and gives you 100mb of space, not bad for a free service.

I’m always impressed by the design of google web pages and the page creator (which is a beta test version) is another great example. It took me about 20 minutes to put [my page->http://dgiffordis.googlepages.com/home] together using one of the many templates provided and this was the first time I’d used it.

I guess it’s aimed non-technical web users and is another carrot to get people to create a google account. But it is also useful to have another place to promote your other websites and get a few backlinks.

Google Homepage

Friday, February 24th, 2006

I’ve just started using the [Google homepage ->http://www.google.co.uk/ig] which is pretty cool. I’ve always had google as my homepage since using the internet often begins with a search and now you can personalise it by adding useful content from various sources. You just need to sign up for a google account. If you use gmail then you already have an account and you can add your gmail inbox to your hompage.

There’s lots to choose from, news, web stuff, funny stuff, etc. I’ve found some magic related stuff, the latest from [About Magic and Illusion ->http://magic.about.com/] and the ‘Latest News’ [MagicTricks.co.uk -> http://www.magictricks.co.uk/]. Unfortunately the magictricks one doesn’t seem to update very often, it’s not really the ‘latest’.
It’s all pretty easy to use as well. Those clever folkes at google are good at designing user friendly web pages. And google continues to take over the world….
