Getting Directory Links

There are thousands of web directories (websites that list and categorize other websites) on the internet. They are a great way of getting links to your site, which is a very important part of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and improving your search engine ranking.

So, find a list of directories and submit your site to as many of them as possible to get as many links as you can. A good tactic? Well no, because the quality of the link is important as well. If you have too many low quality links to your site, from low quality websites, the search engines may assume your site is also low quality.

In addition, submitting to directories is time consuming and you don’t want to waste time submitting to sites that don’t provide a quality link.

How do you know if a directory is a good one and will provide a quality link? This is what to look for:

  • Well written descriptions and links for listings in the directory. This indicates that they care about the content of the directory and won’t except spam.
  • Working links. If links from a directory are broken, this indicates the directory is not well maintained. Search engines will also see sites broken links as low quality.
  • Search engine friendly links. If
  • Logical and strict category structure.
  • A limit to the number of listings on a page, usually 20 to 50. Too many links on a page is often considered spam by the search engines.
  • That the directory is indexed by the search engines.
